It’s been four years since the Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus Quest 2) made Virtual Reality (VR) accessible and affordable to people all around the world. While the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro now claim top honours, the Quest 2 remains a fantastic VR entry point. Besides its rebranding to the Meta Quest 2, there have been significant software upgrades, including better refresh rates as high as 120Hz, upgraded hand tracking, wireless PC connectivity and voice commands.

Between its affordability, the Meta Quest 2 has one of the biggest and best libraries of games and apps available, and it’s all wrapped up in an easy setup even if you’re new to VR.

The recent price cut of the Quest 2 128GB model to just $199 makes it even more compelling. The larger 256GB storage option has been discontinued now that the Quest 3 is available.

And while it's one of the most value-packed gaming headsets, the Quest 2, is not without quirks. Its controllers that rely on AA batteries are at the top of our list as opposed to the built-in rechargeable batteries in its competitors. It's also not the most futuristic like the Vision Pro. In all, we are still convinced it's one of the best VR headsets for most people. So read on to see why this headset is still one of the best options for getting into VR.

What we like about Meta Quest 2

Comfortable design

Out of the box, the Meta Quest 2 immediately presents a minimalistic yet comfortable design. The package contains everything you need for a quick setup: the headset, charging cable/brick, straps, controllers (batteries included), and a glasses spacer. Its all-white colourway and hard plastic exterior offer a sleek update from the original Quest. The fabric straps feel more comfortable than the previous model's elastic design, and the lighter weight ensures comfortable wear even during longer play sessions.

Powering up the headset is simple, and the intuitive setup immerses you in VR within minutes. Built-in speakers deliver surprisingly good audio, though a headphone jack and Bluetooth are available for alternative audio options. Located near the headphone jack, the USB-C port serves both charging and PC connection.

The Quest 2, at 17.7 ounces (503 grams), strikes a balance between portability and functionality for a self-contained headset. While not as compact as a tablet or handheld console, its elastic flex straps make it easy to pack for travel. This stands in contrast to Apple's Vision Pro headset, which, despite its advanced features, weighs approximately 600g. This weight, along with its separate battery pack, impacts its on-the-go convenience.

Robust game library

The Meta Quest 2 offers a vast and exciting game library, ranging from reimagined classics and fresh takes on iconic franchises. Popular highlights include rhythm-based sensations like Beat Saber; action-packed shooters such as Superhot VR, and immersive adventures like Vader Immortal. Even timeless games like Tetris Effect gain a whole new dimension in VR.

This diverse selection is powered by the Snapdragon XR2 chipset, delivering six times the video resolution of the original Quest. Each eye enjoys a nearly 3K display at a fluid 90 frames per second, ensuring a smooth and visually stunning experience.

More exciting titles like The Climb 2 and the exclusive Assassin's Creed accompany the Quest 2's game library.

Installing the games is a seamless process as you can do it directly from the headset or via the synced Meta app. And to keep you connected, Facebook Messenger integration makes chatting and joining friends in-game easier than ever.

Intuitive controllers

Familiar with analogue sticks, the redesigned Touch Controllers of the Quest 2 VR headset are comfortable to hold and shine with their responsive triggers. The wrist straps are a must for safe and immersive gameplay, especially during action-packed moments. Across various titles, the controllers provide accurate motion tracking and satisfying haptic feedback.

While the use of AA batteries might be seen as a downside, the controllers boast an impressive battery life of around 2-3 hours. The Meta Quest 2 also features hand tracking for controller-free navigation and select games. However, this functionality, though promising, can be less precise than using the controllers and is currently limited to a few apps.

Powerful audio experience

The Meta Quest 2 is capable of crisp, directional sound that enhances immersion – you might hear the buzz of a bee or pinpoint the source of enemy fire without needing headphones. This adds a sense of realism to your VR experiences. However, if you crave even greater immersion,  a standard 3.5mm headphone jack lets you easily connect your preferred headset.

Meta's collaboration with Logitech on the Chorus speaker system offers another audio option for those who want richer sound while maintaining a connection to their surroundings. The headset's microphone is dependable, ensuring clear communication with friends during multiplayer adventures.

What we don’t like in the Quest 2 headset

While the Meta Quest 2 headset brings a lot to the table, it’s not without its drawbacks. A notable inconvenience is the non-rechargeable controllers. Unlike competitor headsets that come with built-in batteries, these controllers still rely on traditional AA batteries, which can be a hassle to replace and aren’t as eco-friendly.

Additionally, if you’re looking to expand your VR experience to PC games, you’ll need a Link cable, which is not included. This necessity adds an extra expense for those who want to tap into the vast library of PC VR content. Lastly, the base model of the Quest 2 comes with 128GB of storage, which might be limiting for avid users.

Upgrading to the 256GB model or purchasing additional accessories like the Link cable can significantly increase the overall cost, making the Quest 2 potentially less budget-friendly than it appears at first glance.

Where to buy Meta Quest 2

The most straightforward way to purchase the Meta Quest 2 in Nigeria is directly from the Meta website. For storage options, you'll likely encounter the 128GB model, as both the original 64GB and the premium 256GB versions have been discontinued. Popular online retailers like Jumia and Konga are also excellent alternatives for finding the Meta Quest 2.

Final thoughts

The Meta Quest 2 might not be the bleeding edge of technology, but that doesn't diminish its current appeal.  If you're looking for a fun, portable VR experience with a great game library, it's still a solid pick.  The future of VR may lie in mixed reality, but the Quest 2 offers a taste of the possibilities – and plenty of entertainment – right now.
