So you need to correct or update some bio data on your National Identification Number (NIN)?

You’re in good company! Mismatches between names and ages across different databases like passports, BVN, and birth certificates in the NIN enrolment system are common and can be a real headache.

The good news is that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has launched a self-service portal that lets you easily change things like your address, phone number, and even your date of birth from anywhere.

This handy portal also includes clear pricing for each modification. However, it's important to pay attention to the documentation required, especially for information on your date of birth. Those updates have stricter procedures to follow.

This guide will walk you through the process, step-by-step. We'll break down what documents you need, how much it costs, and everything else you need to know to ensure your NIN details are accurate and up-to-date for all those services that require it.

How to update your correct NIN details online

On the NIMC portal, you can update your information using a desktop device. There are many reasons to update your NIN details, such as:

  • Updating your marital status
  • Correcting typos or errors in your name
  • Changing your address
  • Updating your phone number
  • Adjusting your education level
  • Updating your job details

Choose your update method

You have two options for updating your NIN details:

  • Visit an official NIMC enrollment centre: This is a good option if you prefer in-person assistance.
  • Use the self-service portal: This online method is convenient and allows you to update your details from anywhere.

Using the Self-Service Portal

Here's how to update your NIN details online using the self-service portal:

Once logged in, choose the specific detail you want to modify (e.g., address, phone number).

Required documents for NIN data modification

The documents you need to upload will vary depending on the detail you're updating. Here's a general list:

  • Copy of your NIN slip
  • Valid ID (Passport, Driver's License, Voter's Card)
  • Recent passport photograph

Additional documents based on specific updates:

  • Change of Name: Sworn Affidavit, Newspaper Extract, Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
  • Change of Address: Utility bill, Tenancy Agreement, Bank Statement, Community Leader Attestation
  • Change of Phone Number (due to loss/damage): Police Report
  • Change of Education Level: Recent certificate
  • Change of Job: Offer Letter

Payment options for NIN data correction

Each modification has a specific fee. You can pay securely through the portal using your ATM card. Here's a breakdown of the fees:

  • Change of Name: ₦500
  • Change of Address: ₦1,522.50
  • Change of Phone Number: ₦1,522.50
  • Change of Date of Birth: ₦15,000 (Note that: This can only be done once)

Processing Time

Processing times can vary, but typically it takes 2-3 weeks for your name change to be reflected and may take longer for other updates.

Important Note: For changes related to your Date of Birth, you'll need to complete birth attestation/registration on the National Population Commission (NPC) website before proceeding with the modification on the NIMC portal.

Updating your Date of Birth on the NIMC Self-Service Portal

Changing your Date of Birth on your NIN is a more complex process with some crucial steps to follow:

Before modifying your Date of Birth on the NIMC portal, you must ensure your birth is attested or registered on the National Population Commission (NPC) website.

It's important to note that you can only correct your Date of Birth through the self-service portal once. Subsequent attempts will not be processed or refunded.

Steps to change your NIN Date of Birth online:

  • Begin by verifying your NIN and logging into your account on the NIMC self-service portal.
  • On your dashboard, choose the "Date of Birth Modification" option.
  • Securely pay the ₦15,000 fee for this modification using the payment options available.
  • After payment, enter your NPC certificate number and validate it. This will automatically populate your Date of Birth (which cannot be edited).
  • Then, upload your NPC certificate along with any other required supporting documents.
  • Submit your modification request and carefully review the details before finalising.
  • Ensure you check the attestation box before submitting your request.
  • Upon submission, you'll receive a modification transaction slip.
  • Once approved, you'll be notified, and your updated NIN slip will be sent to your email. You can also print it directly from your dashboard.

We already mentioned the steps for updating other details like name, address, and phone number. However, here are a few things to note:

  • On Name Change: The self-service portal allows multiple name changes, but after three changes online, further modifications require a visit to a NIMC enrollment centre.
  • For Address Change: You can update your address any number of times through the portal or by visiting an NIMC enrollment centre. Documents like utility bills, tenancy agreements, or community leader attestations are accepted as proof.
  • For Phone Number Change: Similar to address changes, phone number updates are allowed multiple times online. However, after three changes on the portal, further modifications need to be processed at an NIMC enrollment centre. A police report is also required when updating your phone number due to loss or damage.

What if I want to change the Image on my NIN Personal ID online?

Unfortunately, you can't modify the headshot image on your NIN online. Recall that when you initially enrol for your NIN, the process typically involves capturing your headshot photograph, fingerprints, and signature simultaneously to ensure that your biometric data is consistent.

So, if you need to update the photo on your ID, you have to visit an NIMC enrolment centre.

This in-person visit ensures that your new photograph is accurately captured and linked to your existing biometric data, maintaining the integrity of your NIN record. Remember to bring any required documents to facilitate the update.
